End of Summer Dev Updates
Last updated on September 06th, 2024
Hello again! The GIC team is engaged in an important internal debate, agonizing over a hotly-contested issue: Is it actually summer until September 22 as the calendar says, or do Labor Day and the start of school mark the real beginning of fall?
Our team is split into devoted camps of those who are still wearing shorts in 50-degree weather and those who have been happily wrapped in blankets since the moment they turned off the air conditioner. We welcome your feedback below to weigh in on this divisive subject.
In a related note, coding is nearly complete on our new pumpkin spice components template… OK, that’s not really a thing. Yet!
We have, however, been grinding out some important work on Lighthouse. Among the top items on our current agenda:
Incoming Elected Official Sites:
Delaware’s newly elected officials and their staffs will take their seats beginning in January, and the GIC will launch their new websites in Lighthouse!
User Navigation Functionality:
We’re working on research-based changes to the way users will get around your website, including a different way to display drop-down menus.
Construction of our Lighthouse Storybook Site:
In keeping with our goal of transparency, we will be providing development specs, codes, standards and best practices in our new Storybook site. Storybook is an open-source tool used for developing and showcasing UI components in isolation. It allows developers to build components independently from the Lighthouse design system. This makes it easier to test, document and visually organize them. It will allow for greater flexibility in creating and sharing information about new Lighthouse developments down the road!
Designing New Plug and Play Features:
Our team is creating a whole new set of easy to plug and play layouts to help agencies lift up their content in a visually pleasing new way. As new components are built, our designers are making them beautiful by incorporating research-driven designs that are clear and accessible!
Strategizing with Agencies in the Queue for Lighthouse:
We can provide materials to help agencies begin productively thinking about their own site’s redesign ahead of any development dates.
We’ll have more information on all of these tasks in the coming weeks, but please reach out if you have questions or thoughts to share from your own website. Or if you’d like to weigh in on the awkward transition between summer and fall.
Our preliminary research indicates that one’s ability to cling to summer depends entirely upon personal dedication.
Enjoy your happy place, wherever it lands, and we’ll have more updates soon!
