Thankful for Sharing!
Last updated on November 26th, 2024
One of the things we’re most thankful for at the GIC is the opportunity to help Delaware agencies share important information with the widest possible audience. The development of the Lighthouse design system is going to benefit agencies and visitors through content organization, efficiency improvements, and increased accessibility standards.
That all adds up to inviting more people to the big table!
Hopefully, this blog provides a chance to share some of what’s going on behind the scenes in the kitchen. Our goal is keeping our process transparent, and we are embracing open source development resources. This will help developers keep Lighthouse easily updated through libraries of free fonts, icons and website components.
Speaking of components, we’re developing them as individual building blocks with visual aesthetics in mind, and we’ll be providing that code and user information in our new Storybook documentation. Here’s what the homepage will look like:
According to its website, Storybook is:
…a frontend workshop for building UI components and pages in isolation. Thousands of teams use it for UI development, testing, and documentation. It’s open source and free.

Another way to look at it: Storybook is a resource library and a user manual together in one convenient spot!
Storybook provides an index of individual components and features on the left side of its screen, and each item opens a page with written information, specs, and visual examples. It’s also a place to provide style and other best practice recommendations. If you scroll down on the Storybook homepage, you will see examples of some layouts and uses.
But for the purposes of state agencies, here are a couple of live examples of other states doing exactly what we’ll be launching soon:
We recommend perusing these Storybooks to get an idea of how our Lighthouse version will look!
Other examples of government website design system documentation include the United States Web Design System, the US Department of Veterans Affairs, and the government of the United Kingdom. All three use platforms that are similar to Storybook to share the specs and details of their curated components.
A final metaphor this holiday week:
Storybook is the book of recipes that will help Delaware agencies prepare an inviting feast of information; Visually beautiful, enriching, and accessible to all!
We’re grateful for the chance to work with so many great people doing such important work on behalf of Delawareans!
Here’s hoping you have a great Thanksgiving, and we’ll keep updating you on the progress of Lighthouse and our new Storybook!
